Some literature cite that the Kung Fu technique was taught by an Indian Monk (Bodhidharma) from Tamil nadu (South India) to the Chinese Buddhists at the Shaolin temple.
However, it also cites that Bodhidharma taught Chinese monks the art of yoga to make them physically fit as Chinese monks who were very weak. He also wanted them to be able to defend them self by the use of weapons.
As the Shaolin temple did not permit the use of any weapons this led to the 5 animal styles of Shaolin martial arts: tiger, leopard, crane, snake and dragon.
However, as other would state it The Chinese monks then integrated this system with their Kung fu (which the Chinese created) and created shaolin kung fu. Further more, Martial arts like Karate, Judo, and Tai Kwan Do are actually variants of the techniques that originated from Shaolin Kung Fu.
